08 - Donut Factory

This Memorial Day weekend I stopped by Donut Factory in the U District. Right near the heart of the University restaurants and bars area this is probably the only place to get a donut not from a grocery store. These are yeast raised donuts, the fluffier of the common donuts. They really reminded me of the donut I would enjoy as I sat in the cart while grocery shopping with my mom. I don't necessarily think comparing them to a grocery store donut is a bad thing, it's familiar and reliable and the right mix of sweet and bready.

I have not been doing a good job of trying out more "out there" donut flavors so in addition to the chocolate with sprinkles I got an ube with coconut shavings. I have never had ube before but I've been noticing it more and more. Ube is derived from yams, common in Filipino desserts. It is supposed to have a nutty flavor but the coconut flakes overpowered any hint of ube, it could have been purple dyed frosting as far as I could tell. Still delicious!

The display case looked what you would see at a Starbucks, a living menu instead of the donuts for sale. The U District Donut Factory is in a little strip mall between a Subway and vape shop, no bike parking or seating (indoors or out), so I walked a little bit until I could lean my bike up in the shade and enjoy my donuts. I can imagine that if I were a UW student I could see myself going out of the way to stop by here early in the morning on my way to class (they're actually open late for a donut shop, much more in line of when I actually made it to class).
