05 - Aurora

I’ll start with the obvious, Aurora Donuts & Ice Cream is what you’d expect if you’re familiar with Aurora and 130th. It’s in a strip mall facing busy and loud Aurora. It’s take-out only, they’ve closed off the space where you used to be able to sit, and it could use a touch of paint. But for this part of town it’s a gem. Surrounded by Office Depots and countless car dealerships and other businesses that don’t make for an area you visit often Aurora Donuts should be a regular destination. If you’re a Dunkin country ex-pat like me and finding yourself needing a fix that Krispy Kreme can’t scratch then this is for you. If you want 2 donuts and very hot cup of coffee for $5, this is for you. The flavors are reliable donut territory; honey glazed, chocolate with sprinkles, powdered sugar. Sure there’s one with peanut crumbles and a long John or two, but you won’t find anything too far from the path. They are serious contenders for a Dunkin alternative, light and sweet. Even the menu board and displays remind me of old Dunkin’s!

The man behind the counter no doubt has seen a variety of customers, in the few minutes I was there a couple drove up in their Acura after a woman down on her luck counted out change to buy a water bottle. The employee couldn’t be more kind or happy to serve anyone that came in. I’ll be back for sure (probably not by bike, Aurora is scary).
